How we are helping

We are supporting NMT to revise its strategic plan, publish research, and train staff and partners in advocacy and digital rights.

About the project

The Foundation’s capacity strengthening grants stream supports smaller Commonwealth civil society organisations in smaller Member States, building their expertise and enhancing their capacity to influence policy.

NMT promotes media freedom and digital rights. To ensure its programming remains effective and aligned with emerging trends, NMT is seeking to strengthen its strategic direction and improve internal systems. With this grant, the organisation will update its strategic plan, enhance its monitoring and evaluation practices, and train staff and partners in advocacy and digital rights. These improvements will enhance its ability to deliver high-quality programmes and support the advancement of freedom of expression.

The key actions for this project are:

  • Strategic planning and systems development.
  • Engaging a consultant to conduct a skills assessment and a current scenario report.
  • Updating the strategic plan.
  • Representing the revised strategy on the organisation’s website.
  • Capacity building and research.
  • Training staff and partners in advocacy and digital rights.
  • Publishing two research papers on social media and freedom of expression in Africa.

As a result of the project, it is hoped that NMT will strengthen its strategic and operational frameworks, leading to improved programme delivery and greater advocacy impact. Staff and partners will be better equipped to champion digital rights and freedom of expression, with new research contributing to regional discourse. Improved monitoring and evaluation systems will enhance accountability and sustainability, positioning NMT for continued growth and influence.

Project Partners
Namibia Media Trust

With the start of The Namibian newspaper in 1985, founders Gwen Lister and Dave Smuts decided not to create an ownership structure with private shareholders, but instead set up a Trust which would aim to further the sustainability of The Namibian, safeguard its assets and reflect and promote the values and principles of press freedom, free speech and independent journalism. The Trust became fully active in October 2011, delivering advocacy and policy interventions to promote media freedom, free expression and access to information in Namibia and beyond. The Trust also provides practical, needs-based workshops, training and mentorship for journalists and non-editorial staff.
